Erta Ale – Hamad Ela​

Early morning of the day, we hike back to the top of the crater to visit the volcanic activities for the second time during sunrise. After that, descend once again from the top of the crater starting 7:00 am down to the camp site for breakfast. Subsequently, after breakfast start driving to Hamad Ela for about 5 hours and have your picnic lunch on the way under the shed of the palm tree. Then after, start visiting Hamad Ela village to see the lifestyle of the local Afar people. Finally, proceed to Salt Lake Asale a huge salty lake where you will swim in a natural pool Salt Lake. Meanwhile, have a wine/beer while enjoying sunset reflections of the salty ground. O/ N camping.

Hamad Ela – Dallol –Mekelle ( 3 hours drive)    

Waking up early in the morning, set off to dallol which is known for its various acidic colors with fumaroles, small spitting acid springs, and lakes. At the same time, dallol is also considered the hottest place on earth. Due to its incredible colors, you feel like you are on Mars. Visiting different terrestrial places formed by volcanic activity like salt mountain and the bubbling oily lake creates a different experience of your trip. Finally, drive back to Hamad Ela for lunch and proceed to Mekelle for Tigray Tours. Spent overnight at Mekelle Hotel

Aafter early breakfast we will stop on Al Nejashi Mosque 1st in Africa and the 2nd oldest after Meca Medina then we drive to guralta cluster to visit the main  three churches; we will leave from the hotel and visit the Tigray Churches of Abuna Yemata Guh; Maryam Korkor and Daniel Korkor. All of which are very different in style but stunningly beautiful in their own way.

To visit Abuna Yemata Guh, walking for about an hour to commence a steep ascent up the side of the Gheralta massif. This steep ascent soon turn into a climb using foot holds and hand holds chipped into the sandstone rock by the passage of many hands and feet. The climb and the walk along very narrow ledges with sheer drops to the side is not one for the faint hearted. The church itself can be reached by walking out on a ledge one meter wide and with a 200m drop to the left hand side. At the entrance there is a small cave and a wooden door built into the rock.

​Of the three, Maryam Korkor is the most impressive architecturally. A huge, high ceiling is supported by 12 free standing pillars. Looking at it you could not help but wonder how the architect managed to carve so high from the ground, over night Vision Hotel at hawzien.

Of our tour, we’ll be driving from Hawzan to Akum, with a stop at the incredible Yeha Temple along the way. This ancient site is one of the oldest known structures in Ethiopia, dating back to the 5th century BC. You’ll be amazed at the size and complexity of this incredible building, which is believed to have been a place of worship for the moon god Almaqah. After exploring Yeha Temple, we’ll continue on to Akum, where you’ll have the chance to visiting the sites of Axum, including the famous obelisks (one that was recently erected after being returned from Italy) and the archeological museum, the Queen of Sheba’s Bath (which supplies water to Axum year-round), Ezana’s enscription, King Kaleb’s tomb, King Bazen’s tomb, and the Queen of Sheba’s Palace. You can also visit the St. Mary of Zion church, where the Ark of the Covenant is kept. Men only are allowed to enter the old church. Unfortunately, no one (except one specially chosen guardian monk) is allowed to enter the chapel where the Ark is kept, over night Axum experience the unique culture and picturesque scenery of this beautiful region.
